2023 GARDEN RECAP

2023 was the year for the flowers apparently! The cosmos were booming up until our first frost!
The season started out a bit slow. Most of my seeds didn’t germinate, and I felt a bit down about that.
The biggest disappointment was the sunflowers. Sunflowers are like my pride and joy each year, and I only had about fifteen germinate.
Little did I know, the cosmos would shine!

Vegetables planted this year:
Bell peppers
Carrots
Chili peppers
Cucumbers
Edamame
Eggplant
Habanero peppers
Okra
Snap peas
Tomatoes (three varieties)

Flowers planted this year:
Celosia
Cosmos (many varieties)
Marigolds
Nasturtium
Sunflowers (many varieties)
Zinnias (many varieties)

Herbs planted this year:
Basil
Bee balm (lemon balm)
Cilantro
Oregano
Parsley
Sage

Lessons I learned this year:

  • Nasturtiums prefer more shade

  • I love bee balm and plan to plant a lot more next year

  • The skinny bamboo sticks I bought from Home Depot were not strong enough to work as a cucumber trellis

  • Put netting up around the sunflowers until they sprout

  • Cosmos are tall!

  • I don’t need to plant quite so many tomatoes
