STEPHENS GAP

Stephens Gap is an amazing little hidden gem in Alabama. It is, hands down, the coolest place we’ve been in the South. First things first, be sure to get a permit. They do check the parking lot, so you need to have the permit in your car and the liability waiver signed. Stephens Gap is not a state park or public land, so we are super lucky the owners allow hiking and exploring on their property. It is very important to wear shoes with traction, preferably hiking boots if possible. The cave is very slippery, especially the descent into the cave.

After parking in the grass lot, you’ll see the trailhead sign. As you are hiking, there are yellow diamond markers to keep you on track. We were confused a few times, but ended up finding our way just fine. The trail is an out-and-back trail that totals about two miles.

Eventually, to be honest it will seem like a while, you’ll get to the cave entrance. There are two entrances - a walk in, more like crawl in, and an entrance for rappelling. Be careful crawling in - the rocks are usually very slippery, and it is hard to see. As we were crawling into the cave, I thought we were about to just fall into it.. it’s super hard to see your path or what’s inside!

Once you descend into the cave and your eyes adjust, if you’re anything like us, you’ll be amazed. Amazed that you are allowed to experience such an amazing place without being monitored. Amazed that such a place exists. Amazed that you can just chill inside. Stephens Gap is, hands down, one of our favorite places in Alabama so far. It is a hidden gem, for sure.

Once you’ve spent the afternoon in the cave, it’s time to climb back out! Don’t forget to go slow and be careful! Hike back out the same way you came in, and you’ll make it to the parking lot in no time!
